About "The RAT Watch"

by Preet Lambon

About the artwork

The RAT Watch is a hilarious and surprising parody of Rembrandt van Rijn's famous painting "The Night Watch". In this version, the human figures are replaced by cute yet mischievous rats, dressed in beautiful costumes and headgear that seem to come straight out of the 17th-century militia.

The rats stand proud and determined in similar impressive formation as the characters in the original painting, and armed with miniature muskets, halberds and swords, they appear ready for an adventurous night mission.

The atmosphere of the painting is still majestic and mysterious, with a dark colour palette emphasising the nighttime setting. The play of light and shadow creates dramatic contrasts, giving the scene a sense of excitement and mystery, just like in the original.

While the original title "The Night Watch" suggests a sense of serious vigilance, the title "RAT Watch" brings in a comic element. The painting invites a smile as it takes the viewer on an amusing journey through the rich history of Dutch art, with a nod to the everyday mischief of these fluffy but determined rats.
