The worthies of the Amsterdam clothmakers' guild, known as ?The Steel Masters', Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, 1662 This is Rembrandt's first and only regent piece. It stands out for its exceptional size and larger-than-life figures. The eyes of all the steel masters ? who checked the quality of coloured cloth ? are on us. One of them briefly rose from his chair, as if he had just noticed us. Because of the low vantage point, the table seems to protrude forward from the picture plane.
