About "The Troll of the North - Hvitserkur in mist and silver"

by Gerry van Roosmalen

About the artwork

an the coast of northern Iceland, Hvítserkur rises from the sea - a jagged rock formation that, according to tradition, was once a troll. When dawn broke and the first rays of sunlight hit the horizon, the troll was still in the sea. He had forgotten time and petrified forever when daylight reached him. So Icelandic folklore tells.

On the day this picture was taken, it seemed as if that old legend was breathing again. The sky was grey, the sea was grey, and even the distant mountains were hidden in mist. Instead of seeking colour, I chose to embrace the grey. With a shutter speed of ninety seconds, the sea became a flat sheet, shiny like blasted aluminium. On it stood Hvitserkur - silent, timeless and unyielding, like a creature still watching over the north.

In its form, you see what you want to see: a drinking dragon, a giant troll, or a mythical creature left over from a dream. What is certain is that Hvitserkur holds a piece of Iceland's soul - raw, mysterious and unearthly beautiful.
