The Wave is one of the many relatively unknown gems in the southwest of the United States. The area is actually a small part of the area called North Coyote Buttes which in turn is part of the even bigger Vermillion Cliffs N.M.. This N.M. is a rugged and very inaccessible area on the border of Utah and Arizona and is only rarely visited by tourists.
The Wave is a spectacular wave-shaped sandstone. Over the centuries, old sand dunes have been transformed into hard rock and wind and rain have spectacularly eroded the landscape into a red-orange undulating landscape, with each layer of the rock having a different colour red-orange. In addition to the colours, it is mainly the lines in the sandstone that attract attention.
