The White House in Rotterdam, designed by architect William Molenbroek, was opened in 1898. Although only 43 meters high it was, for many years, the tallest office building in Europe. The building survived the bombing of 1940 as well as a demolition proposal in the seventies and is now widely regarded as one of the icons of the city.
Also the Old Harbour, which is as the name suggests, the oldest harbor basin of the city, had almost disappeared. In the basic plan for post-war reconstruction an enormous roundabout was planned on this location. Fortunately, that never happened, and now there is a popular area with pubs and restaurants around the Old Harbour.
The White House can be seen here reflected in the water of the Old Harbour, with a few historic ships to make the picture complete.
