About ‘The departure’ by Geert Van Baelen

Sometimes a painting conveys more than a landscape or a crucifix. This work is a raw, black-and-white painting about farewell, doubt and the fine line between faith and despair. Based on a photograph I took of a wayside cross, this work has evolved into an expressive image in which religious symbolism and personal experience converge.

The text forms an integral part of the artwork:

“That night, before I left, I changed the oil and gave my soul to Jesus and the Devil.
‘Go on then, divide it up. Adios!’”

These words lend the painting a literary dimension and invite the viewer to interpret the story for themselves. Is it a farewell? A confession? An inner struggle? The answer is deliberately left open.

With its powerful black-and-white contrast, bold brushstrokes and austere composition, this work evokes a timeless atmosphere. It appeals to lovers of modern figurative art, religious art, symbolism and art with an existential undertone.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
