About "The desert ship in the sand"

by Endre Lommatzsch

About the artwork

The camel, often referred to as the "ship of the desert", is one of the most impressive animals to survive in the dry, hot regions of the world. Especially in the vast, golden sand dunes of the deserts of Morocco, Egypt or the Arab countries, camels are an indispensable part of life and culture. With their characteristic humps, which serve as fat stores, they are perfectly adapted to the harsh desert climate.

Camels are persistent animals that are able to go for weeks without water, as they draw moisture from their food and the stores in their humps. They are still the preferred means of transport in many desert regions and are often used for caravans or as pack animals. Their calm, patient nature and ability to endure extreme conditions make them a fascinating subject.

These images show camels in their natural environment - be it walking slowly and steadily through the desert, transporting goods or relaxing under the shady roof of a tent. Their striking appearance and significance for the culture of the desert dwellers make the camel a unique and highly symbolic animal of the desert.
