The emerald-green Soca in the autumnal Karst

by Rolf Schnepp

The emerald-green River Soča is one of Slovenia’s most fascinating natural wonders. With its exceptionally clear, turquoise waters, it flows through a striking landscape of light-coloured limestone cliffs, steep mountain slopes and dense forests. This photograph shows the river in its autumnal setting, when the forests along the karst gorge are ablaze with warm shades of yellow, orange and green.

The meandering course of the riverbed, the bizarre rock formations and the gentle movement of the water lend this landscape scene a special dynamism. In the foreground, a small set of rapids provides a striking contrast to the calm, emerald-green water’s surface. The light-coloured limestone cliffs frame the river’s course and draw the eye deep into the wooded valley of the Julian Alps.

The Soča in Slovenia is a popular destination for nature lovers, walkers and landscape photographers. The Soča Valley exudes a unique charm, particularly in autumn. This nature photograph combines the intense colours of the famous turquoise river with the warm atmosphere of the autumnal mountain landscape. An atmospheric landscape image for all who appreciate unspoilt nature, alpine landscapes and the beauty of Slovenia.
