This photo was taken shortly after sunset from Montevideo residential tower on Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam. There is still daylight but the shutter speed is already two seconds, which can be seen by the streaks of light from the traffic at the Schiedamsedijk - Vasteland intersection. In many homes and offices, the lights are already on.
Apart from the red of the tail lights and the soft yellow of the interior lighting, there is relatively little colour in the picture. Almost all buildings, and even the tourist boats in the foreground, seem to stick to a palette of black, white and all shades of grey in between. As a result, despite that busy evening rush hour, the image still exudes a kind of tranquillity.
Slightly right of centre, we see the Leuvehaven, one of Rotterdam's oldest harbours; currently in use as the Maritime Museum's museum harbour, which includes a grain dredger and a floating barge.
If you look closely, you can also see a bit of Rotterdam's most famous street in the background: Coolsingel.
Finally, I would like to draw attention to that Rotterdam icon, the Erasmus Bridge. Here we see 'm in a minor role for once: the swan-shaped pylon is out of the picture, only a few cables are visible.
