About the artwork

The Oudegracht is the best-known canal in the Dutch city of Utrecht. The approximately two-kilometre-long canal can be regarded as the connecting piece between the Kromme Rijn and the Vecht, and cuts through the entire city centre from south to north. For centuries, it has been the city's main artery. The system of wharves and wharf cellars of Utrecht's Oude- and Nieuwegracht is unique in the world on this scale.

Residential houses can now be seen on the right, but this building used to house Bierbrouwerij De Boog. This brewery was presumably founded in 1584 by one Henrick van Vianen and lasted no less than three centuries. In the premises on the Oudegracht, the required grains were stored and processed into malt. In the wharf cellars, the beer could ferment further in barrels and then wait to be transported to the customer.

This photo was shot on a windless Sunday evening in autumn, where it was serene and calm on this part of Utrecht's Oudegracht. An added bonus was the beautiful reflection in the water of the Oudegracht, which made this walk along the wharves all the more of a pleasure. Also, the leaves on the trees were starting to turn a nice shade of colour, which contrasted nicely with the deep blue sky in the blue hour.
