El Ateneo Grand Splendid in Buenos Aires is one of the most impressive bookshops in the world. Originally opened in 1919 as a magnificent theatre, the building was later transformed into a cinema and finally converted into a bookshop in 2000. The original theatre architecture has been largely preserved, giving the place a unique and almost magical atmosphere. The stage, which was once used for performances, now serves as a cosy reading area with comfortable armchairs.
The balconies that once accommodated spectators are now filled with bookshelves and offer a spectacular view of the entire space. The magnificent ceiling frescoes, painted by Nazareno Orlandi and depicting scenes of the sky, are particularly impressive. The elegant lighting also contributes to the special atmosphere.
El Ateneo is more than just a place to buy books - it is a cultural landmark that is often used for events, readings and musical performances. A visit there combines art, literature and history in an extraordinary way.
