About "The old mines of Las Minas de Mazarrón in Spain"

by Truus Nijland

About the artwork

Since the 15th century, the mines of Mazarrón have been important for minerals found in these mines.

But since today, the mines lie silent and abandoned. Upon entering the mining area, you enter a completely different world. The first thing that comes upon you are the mine mountains consisting of yellow and red hues, due to the oxidation of the mine waste. Every step forward is a step back in time. It is as if you have entered a film set where the stories of the mine workers come back to life. The mining complex consists of a main building, a materials loading area, the work areas, remnants of miners' offices and houses, abandoned barracks, old machines, tall chimneys, mine shafts, entrances to old mine pits and tunnels going into the hills. When it has rained, puddles of red water attract attention here and there. This intense colour is due to the drainage of acids from the mines. I found the scenery breathtaking and indescribable.
