About ‘The pull’ by Marcus Riedel

A human silhouette stands facing a smartphone. Yet this familiar scene is turned on its head. Traces of red, pink, orange and dark colours burst out from the screen, explosive and almost impossible to contain. The device no longer seems merely to be being looked at. It responds, reaching out into the space and almost into the person. The image explores the question of what has become of our attention. Digital spaces have long since ceased to be an external world that we can enter and leave at will. Images, news, expectations, comparisons and the reactions of others continue to resonate within us. We look at a screen and, in doing so, are ourselves looked at, judged, affirmed or unsettled. The boundary between inside and outside becomes permeable.

The work was created in watercolour. The figure is rendered in subdued shades of grey and black, whilst the colour spreads almost uncontrollably across the surface of the smartphone. Splashes, gradients, empty spaces and pigments running downwards are a deliberate part of the composition. The inherent dynamism of the water contrasts with the geometric order of the device.

Despite its critical undertones, the image is not an indictment of technology. Rather, it speaks of a modern ambivalence. We have access to almost everything and, at the same time, must learn what of it is allowed to gain access to us.

Thanks to the strong contrast, the generous white space and the intense movement of colour, the work has a clear, contemporary impact and makes a striking statement, particularly in minimalist, modern spaces.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
