'The soul of the storm at sea' painted by Humphrey Isselt is a painting that needs to be seen in actual size. That is because the painting depicts several scenes that are hidden in the painting. At first sight one sees a turbulent sea with roaring waves and seagulls in flight.
However, the painting also contains a reference to the sea that has taken many lives. Despair and danger are painted in the waves. The seagulls symbolise from right to left the 'passing away' of the soul. The gulls are actually one gull in various stages of 'impermanence'. The gull on the far left has the least structure: the soul is free and flies out of the painting, letting go of the reality of life.
