About ‘Three ways’ by Marcus Riedel

A solitary, dark figure stands at a fork in the road. Three paths lead through a vast landscape in different directions. To the left, bright light shines over the mountains; straight ahead, the path disappears into the distance; to the right, the horizon glows with intense shades of orange and red. Flowers and plants surround the figure, yet they remain motionless. Nothing has been decided yet.

The image explores a simple yet unsettling idea. A life is shaped not only by what we do, but equally by what we choose not to do. With every decision, we set out on one path and leave others behind. Particularly in mid-life, these unlived possibilities can resurface. Not necessarily as regret, but as a question.

In this respect, the work also touches upon C. G. Jung’s ideas on individuation and the unlived life. Development does not mean arriving at the right place at some point. Rather, it requires us to come to terms with our own decisions, opportunities and missed chances.

The work was created predominantly in watercolour. Transparent layers of sky and softly blending colours contrast with bolder, almost opaque sections of the landscape. Small floral details contrast with the black, deliberately non-individualised figure. She could be anyone.

In an interior setting, the painting initially appears as a colourful, atmospheric landscape. Only upon closer inspection does its second layer emerge. It is a painting about decisions, possibilities and the curious fact that we can imagine several lives, but live only one of them.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
