About ‘Traces of time’ by Cobi de Jong

A weathered surface becomes an abstract landscape. In *Traces of Time*, dark blue steel, worn paint, scratches and a metal bolt combine to form a composition that appears almost painterly.
The white traces seem almost as if they had been applied to the surface with a brush. They bring movement and light to the dark blue and lend the image a graphic quality. The central bolt forms a recognisable anchor point, yet at the same time it remains unclear exactly what we are looking at. The close-up causes the object’s original function to fade into the background.
This photograph is about looking. About discovering beauty in places you might normally pass by without a second thought. Here, decay is not an end, but a process in which new forms, colours and structures emerge. Scratches, damage and flaking paint become part of a new image.
A work that really comes into its own as a large-format piece on the wall, where the rich textures and subtle details allow you to discover something new time and time again.
