About "Travel photography: niche in Lepakshi temple with Ganesha, India"

About the artwork

A niche with a statue of Ganesha in the Veerabhadra temple in Lepakshi, India. This is a 16th century Hindu temple dedicated to the fiery god Shiva.
Ganesha (also called Ganesh, Ganapati Tantra, Ekadanta or Vinayaka) is the elephant-headed deva in the pantheon of Hinduism. He is the god of knowledge and wisdom, removes obstacles and is the patron saint of travellers. His vahana, vehicle, is a mouse or rat called Mashika. Hindus pray to Ganesha before starting anything new, such as a new job or when they move house. Ganesha is the son of the god Shiva and the goddess Parvati. A statue of him often stands at junctions of roads in India so that he can help travellers when they have to make a choice and take a new path. Ganesha is always at the beginning of something, a first impulse.
