Perspective and frame size: This is an extreme close-up (macro shot). A frontal angle (top view) has been chosen, which flattens the three-dimensional structure of the surface into an almost two-dimensional patterned area. Focus and depth of field: The image utilises a continuous depth of field. Both the lichen fronds in the foreground and the moss further back, as well as the dark ground in the top-left corner, are rendered in sharp focus. This emphasises the tactile qualities and fine textures of the organisms. Composition and contrasts: Two-thirds of the image (bottom and right) are dominated by the light, expansive forms of the blue-grey foliose lichen. It looks like a natural carpet.
One third (top left) breaks up this structure. Here, a strong light-dark contrast created by the almost black, damp ground provides visual depth.

Colour elements as eye-catchers: the fresh, vibrant green of the moss cushions adds deliberate splashes of colour. In particular, the larger patch of moss at the left-hand edge of the image acts as a visual anchor, guiding the eye into the picture. Furthermore, a bright yellow crustose lichen flashes into view at the top right, complementarily expanding the colour spectrum. Composition: The image dispenses with a single, central main motif and instead utilises the principle of ‘ "Fill the Frame" ’ (filling the frame). As a result, the motif appears as a chance, intimate snapshot of an infinitely continuing microcosm in nature.
