About "Tribute to John James Audubon"

by Harry Hadders Design

About the artwork

Homage to John James Audubon (1785 -1851) he was a French-American writer, forester, naturalist, ornithologist, painter and illustrator. In 1820 he embarked on a boat trip on the Ohio River with the ambitious goal of making a painted picture of all the birds of North America. In 1826 he left for England to publish his book "The Birds of America" with 435 pictures of mostly unknown species of birds. The book became literally world famous, the pictures were large, clear, vivid, accurate and set in the natural habitat of the birds concerned. A number of birds that he immortalized are now indeed extinct, such as the giant auk, the ivory-billed woodpecker, the carolina parakeet and the migratory pigeon. His book also did much to awaken the awareness of natural values. Thus he can certainly be seen as the founder of nature conservation.
