Colorful watercolor painting of a shiny golden tuba.
The tuba is the brass family's lowest-pitched musical instrument.
It made its debut in the mid 19th century, making it one of the more recent additions to the modern orchestra and concert band.
The tuba has been a staple of jazz since its inception.
Bands employed a tuba for outdoor concerts and a double bass for inside performances in the early years. The tuba was occasionally referred to as "brass bass" in this context, as opposed to the double bass (string bass). Many musicians were multi-instrumentalists. This was a common technique in the New Orleans jazz scene.
Some tubas, referred to as "marching tubas" can be transformed to a marching style.
