Twisk is a village in the municipality of Medemblik, in the Dutch province of North Holland, southwest of the town of Medemblik. It used to be a ribbon village, but since the late 20th century there have also been many branches with new buildings.
Twisk has a protected villagescape. Besides two church buildings, the village has many old cheese-cover farmhouses; in fact, it has one of the highest concentrations of cheese-cover farmhouses in the Netherlands. Twisk also counts 50 national monuments.
Twisk has a fairly quiet history. The village did not experience extreme poverty, but neither did it have enormous wealth or major disasters. However, there was a good boom in the 18th, late 19th and early 20th centuries. That prosperity can still be seen in the many highly decorated farms and houses from that period. The village was also known throughout the centuries as a fairly prosperous village, that prosperity came mainly from good pasture land surrounding the village.
Medemblik is a town in the municipality of Medemblik of the same name in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is located in West Friesland on the IJsselmeer. Medemblik is the oldest town in West Friesland: it obtained city rights in 1289 from Count Floris V of Holland, who at the time had just definitively subjected West Friesland to his grave authority.
West Friesland is a region in the north of the province of North Holland, enclosed by the Westfriese Omringdijk and bordered to the north by the Wieringermeer and Zijpe, to the west by Kennemerland and to the south by the Schermer and Beemster rivers. West Friesland is mainly agricultural in character, with long ribbon villages. Although Medemblik and Schagen are the oldest towns, Hoorn and Enkhuizen in particular have a historic character, which they owe to their heyday during the time of the VOC.
