This common seal (Phoca vitulina) were lying on the beach in Katwijk aan Zee. This is a place where they often lie, not caring about anything. It was a beautiful autumn day with lots of sunshine.
The common seal is a predator that mainly eats fish. The coat colour varies from grey to dark brown or even black. Usually, the animals have dark spots. The head is rounded and small in proportion to the body. The closed nostrils run in a V-shape.
Common seals grow 120 to 195 centimetres long and weigh 45 to 130 kilograms. Females are usually slightly smaller than males. Females usually grow to be 120 to 156 centimetres long, males 130 to 195 centimetres.
Young seals are called howlers.
