U.S. Air Force Reserve's Swing-Role C-130J Hurricane Hunters The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron is a unique unit within the U.S. Air Force. It is the only operational unit in the world to routinely conduct weather reconnaissance, monitoring tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and central Pacific Ocean for the National Hurricane Centre in Miami.
To perform that task, the Hurricane Hunters have 10 WC-130J aircraft. These Super Hercules aircraft are equipped instruments for collecting meteorological data.
