About ‘Under the African sun’ by Arthur Batenburg

This photograph, taken on Ilha de Mozambique, exudes warmth, colour and the everyday life of this historic island. A man walks down a sun-drenched street carrying a large bundle of dried palm leaves on his shoulders. His simple appearance contrasts beautifully with the weathered, colourful façades behind him.

The ochre-yellow walls, peeling paint and striking blue doors tell a story of Ilha de Mozambique’s long history. It is precisely these signs of age that give the street so much character. The harsh African sunlight enhances the warm tones of the façades, whilst the blue of the doors and windows provides a striking colour contrast.

The man is the living element in an almost picturesque setting. His posture and heavy load show that this is not a staged street scene, but a spontaneous moment from everyday life. As a result, the photograph becomes more than just a colourful cityscape: it offers a glimpse into the rhythm and atmosphere of Ilha de Mozambique, where history, simplicity and everyday life come together naturally.

Ilha de Mozambique has been on the World Heritage List for many years due to the history of its buildings, which date back to the 16th century. A unique photograph taken even before the restoration of the buildings began.
