About ‘VOC Naval battle painting: The capture of the Royal Prince’

The capture of the Royal Prince, Willem van de Velde (II), ca. 1670 On 13 June 1666, the third day of the Four Days' Sea Battle, the English admiral's ship Royal Prince ran aground on a sandbank off the English coast. It fell into the hands of Cornelis Tromp, who captured the crew and transferred them to his ship, the Gouda (left). By order of Admiral De Ruyter, Tromp had to set fire to his booty. Rather, he had dragged it to Holland in triumph.
