Amsterdam's Oude Kerk seen in a vista from an alley in Amsterdam's 'De Wallen' neighbourhood. The Oude Kerk is a historically and culturally significant church in the heart of Amsterdam, located in the De Wallen neighbourhood, near the Nieuwmarkt. It is the city's oldest church and was originally built in the 13th century as a Roman Catholic church. Over the years, the Oude Kerk has undergone several transformations. In the 16th century, the church became Protestant after the Reformation and in the following centuries it was renovated and expanded several times. The Old Church has many special features, including an impressive wooden vault dating back to the 15th century and a huge organ from the 17th century that is still played during special events and concerts. There are also numerous works of art to admire, including paintings, sculptures and stained-glass windows. Besides its religious and historical significance, the Old Church also has a special place in Amsterdam culture. It is regularly used as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and cultural events.
