About the artwork

Gerardus Johannes Bos, to Tieleman Cato Bruining.

The Oude Singel (on some maps indicated as Oude Vest) is a canal and street in the northern inner city of the Dutch city of Leiden.

The main waterway is located between the Galgewater in the west and the Harbour (part of the Old Rhine) in the east. In the Netherlands, the urban water management system is characterised by a high level of urbanisation and a high degree of urbanisation. The water between the Beestenmarkt and the Turfmarkt/Prinsessekade is also part of the Oude Singel.

As the name suggests, the Oude Singel was once constructed as a waterway and the former northern border of the city. The street name Oude Vest refers to the fortifications that were located here.

Gerardus Johannes Bos (Leiden, Holland, Netherlands 9 April 1825 - 13 May 1898) was a Dutch painter, etcher, lithographer and lithographer.

Bos held many social positions. He was director of the Leidsche Schilder- en Tekenacademie Ars Aemula Naturae, director of the Genootschap Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix, deacon of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and regent of the Evangelical Orphanage and Old people's Home.
