About "View through to the Eusebius church Arnhem"

by Nicky Kapel

About the artwork

The Eusebius Church or Grote Kerk in Arnhem is the largest and main Protestant church in Arnhem. The church belonged to the Roman Catholic Church until the iconoclasm, which took place in Arnhem in 1578-1579. From 1865, Arnhem also had the Kleine Eusebiuskerk on Nieuwe Plein, which was demolished in 1990.

During World War II, the city became the scene of the Battle of Arnhem, a historic airborne landing and battle that took place from 17 to 25 September 1944, as part of Operation Market Garden. The Eusebius Church was in the middle of the firing line and was almost completely destroyed. Only the smashed tower still protruded above the ruins of the city. After the war, the church was rebuilt via extensive restoration (1947-1964). Since then, the church has been considered a national icon of reconstruction.[1]

The church has served as a multipurpose venue since 2019, with church services several times a year.
