A view from the end of the ferry port at Castiglione del Lago, Perugia, Umbria looking along the walkway and up to the Rocca de Leone, a 13th century fortress. The fortress (fortezza) was built as a pentagon with four towers and dominates Lago Trasimeno. It was designed to give its owners strategic control over the lake and it has withstood a number of sieges. Leonardo da Vinci came up from Rome to study the fortifications because it was considered such a strong example of a fortress. Lago Trasimeno is the largest lake in the centre and south of Italy.
