Pieter Ringoot never started a painting without solid preliminary studies of his subject. The artist drew this Study in pen and ink in preparation for the oil painting " View of St Gertrudis church and the woods from the Scheldt dike at Vlassenbroek" which is also available through this website as a print on various materials.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many artists moved to Vlassenbroek and the artists' village along the Scheldt became an inspiration for many painters from the Dendermond School. In the second half of the 20th century, the quiet eastern Flemish village became mainly a tourist attraction for cyclists and hikers. (source wikipedia)
