Hato is characterized by the rugged north coast of Curacao. In this area you will find the Hato Caves, one of the tourist attractions of Curacao. The caves are thought to have been inhabited around the year 500 by the Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of Curaçao. During the slave era, the caves were used by escaped slaves.
