About "Watercolour Painting Brouwersgracht Amsterdam Blue Hour"

About the artwork

A Watercolour Painting of the Brouwersgracht in Amsterdam during the Blue Hour.

The Brouwersgracht is an Amsterdam canal that connects the Singel with the Singelgracht. The canal marks the northwestern boundary of the ring of canals. Between Prinsengracht and Singelgracht, the Brouwersgracht forms the northern border of the Jordaan.

From 1612, the ring of canals was dug southwards from the Brouwersgracht. Since 1594, the canal owes its name to the many beer breweries that could be found in this neighbourhood in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. From 1782, the Brouwersgracht near Driehoekstraat was home to the last Amsterdam gin and liqueur distillery: De Ooievaar. Most of the warehouses, built for storing goods, were converted into residential houses. The building at no. 276 used to house the Dienst van het IJkwezen; today it houses the Mondriaan Fund.
