Bonito is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Today, the place attracts a fair number of tourists who come for the caves, clear rivers and waterfalls in this region that lies on an eroded limestone plateau.
The rivers and lakes in this area are known for their very clear water, partly due to the presence of limestone that acts as a filter. Besides cerrado vegetation, there is deciduous forest and semi-evergreen forest, which loses only part of its leaves in the dry season. Evergreen forests are found near rivers. Bank vegetation also plays a role in maintaining the crystal-clear rivers. Tourists flock to these clear waters because it has unprecedented snorkelling opportunities. The rivers look like natural aquariums with their abundance of various fish species.
Famous sights in this area include the Gruta do Lago Azul, a large cave with a lake that has an incredibly deep blue colour; and the Buraco das Araras, a huge sinkhole some 100 metres in diameter where some 60-70 breeding pairs of macaws live.
