The Eilandspolder is located in the middle of North Holland, sandwiched between the Beemster and Schermer drying plants. Villages in this area are Graft, de Rijp, Oost- and Westgraftdijk, Noordeinde, Grootschermer, Driehuizen and Schermerhorn. To the south it almost joins the Wormer and Jisperveld, an area with a similar character. To the north lies the Mijzen polder, a more or less similar area that is still mainly used agriculturally.
The Eilandspolder is an extremely water-rich area that was diked in the 13th century. Until the 17th century it was surrounded by a number of very large lakes, in particular the Schermer and the Beemster, and not far from the sea. It is remarkable how high the polder is in relation to the reclamation areas of Schermer and Beemster. Originally, it is a slightly saline moorland. Until recently, the Eilandspolder was largely navigable land, which means that the grassland plots could only be reached by water.
