The Arsenal was a complex of shipyards, and arms and ammunition depots. It was built around 1104 and grew into the largest industrial complex in Europe prior to the Industrial Revolution.
The Arsenal's main gate, the Porta Magna, was built around 1460 and is considered the first neo-classical structure in Venice. It was possibly built by Antonio Gambello to a design by Jacopo Bellini. In 1687, two lions looted from Greece were placed next to the gate.
