Beaten rope lying in one of the last traditional shipyards in the port city of Sur, Oman. The thick rope was used for fishing at sea. On a traditional wooden boat and is now lying in wait at the shipyard during maintenance of the boat.
A close-up clearly shows how the ropes are made up of twisted cables around each other that are interwoven as larger cables to increase the strength of the ropes.
The wear and tear from use on the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and who knows where else, is visible. Dragging through the sea, rubbing against the boat and drying in the fires the sun has left its mark. The wear tells the story of the voyages and gives the beaten rope a strong and lived-in appearance.
Stacked in a corner of the yard, the rope is waiting. Will it be brought back on board for another trip or will it be discarded and replaced with a new unused rope.
