About ‘What’'’s in it for me?’ by Elviedan Monjet

What’'’s in It for Me

What’'’s in It for Me captures a quiet moment between a mysterious water spirit and a koi, bathed in the cool light of a full moon. Their gazes meet in a scene that feels both serene and enigmatic. Is this an encounter based on curiosity, trust or self-interest? The title invites you to answer that question for yourself.

For this work, I drew inspiration from the symbolism of the koi, which represents perseverance, growth and transformation. I wanted to create an image in which the relationship between humans and nature is not straightforward, but leaves room for different interpretations. The subtle particles of light, the reflection of the moon and the contrast between cool blues and warm golds enhance the dreamlike, almost mythical atmosphere.

The work was created entirely in Adobe Photoshop using a combination of photomontage, digital painting techniques and meticulously crafted lighting effects. Thanks to its tranquil appearance and rich detail, it continues to reveal new elements, ensuring it remains captivating both up close and from a distance. In an interior setting, it brings a sense of tranquillity, mystery and wonder, whilst the title invites conversation and personal interpretation.
