The wheel, in combination with the windmill, is the reason why the Netherlands exists. It has become so big while being so small. Since all the dykes, bridges, storm barriers, and other modern contrivances, these behemoths have come to a standstill. Like a monument to days gone by, they now stand there only for show. Unused, silent, unloved. Most of them, at least. It makes me think. What is technology that is so important today and completely obsolete in 150 years' time? Will we as a species still be around then?
To me, this image is both sad and beautiful. Because despite no longer needing to fulfil its function, it is still a beautiful analogue machine that has earned its retirement. And despite everything, it still stands proudly. I can only wish that my legacy has made an impact by then. However small.
