William I, prince of Orange, Adriaen Thomasz. Key, c. 1579 oil on panel, h 48cm × w 35cm Among the nobles who revolted in the Netherlands against the authority of Philip II, William of Orange (1533-1584) grew into the great leader of the revolt. He stood up for his own interests, sought greater independence and advocated freedom of religion. In 1580, Philip II put a price on his head; he was assassinated four years later.
