Winter is one of the four seasons in the temperate and polar regions. The alternation of the winter with the other seasons is caused by the tilt of the earth's axis. In the northern hemisphere the earth's axis is away from the sun in winter and towards the sun in summer. In the southern hemisphere this is reversed, so that winter takes place during the summer of the northern hemisphere. The most characteristic of the winter is therefore, besides the in comparison with other seasons low temperatures, the short day length.
