Winter as Silence

by Wim's Pastelart

In this atmospheric and profound dry pastel work, Belgian artist Wim Cuppens captures the very essence of winter tranquillity. The painting, entitled * "Winter as Silence"*, is a breathtaking example from his landscape collection in which atmosphere, texture and a sophisticated play of light blend together masterfully.

The composition immediately transports the viewer to the heart of a tranquil winter forest. The true power of this work lies in the innovative layered technique employed by Cuppens. The snow in the foreground is not a dull, uniform white expanse, but shimmers like a shimmering sea of colour. Expressive, textural brushstrokes in subtle shades of violet, cool blue and soft ochre yellow dance across the ground, lending the snow an almost tangible chill and sheen. The layered, dark tree trunks in the background give the painting a beautiful, powerful graphic structure. The trunks are rendered in deep, dark pigments, in which warm sienna and umber tones contrast with the bright, caked-on snow edges on the windward side. This bold interplay between the deep forest and the illuminated forest floor creates a rich visual vibrancy and a fantastic sense of depth.

This masterpiece strikes a perfect balance on the boundary between realism and contemporary impressionism. It exudes a serene, icy stillness that simultaneously brims with artistic vitality. It is a luxurious and timeless work of art that brings an atmosphere of tranquillity, refinement and poetic drama to any modern architectural interior or high-end collection.
