Macro shot of a light pink yarrow,

Especially the inflorescences and the leaves contain medicinal substances. The plant was formerly used as a stimulant and tonic. Nowadays yarrow is still used against colds and flu. The essential oils can relieve intestinal cramps and stomach aches and have an anti-inflammatory effect, the present flavonoids have an antibiotic effect, the salicylic acid has a painkilling effect and the potassium and sesquiterpene both counteract edema formation. The green leaves have a bleeding effect and were previously used for the treatment of wounds.

Taking juice from the plant actually stimulates bleeding. It can promote menstruation, but also cause nosebleeds. Therefore the plant is also called nosebleed. Often a tea is made that improves the blood circulation during menstruation and prevents cramps. A tea cure of yarrow is diuretic and helps against edema and gout. A cover of yarrow speeds healing of first degree burns and open wounds.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a plant of the composite family. The species name millefolium refers to the double feathered leaf, which makes it look like it consists of many small leaves. The generic name is derived from Achilles, who took yarrow with his armies for the treatment of battle wounds.
