Especially the inflorescences and the leaves contain medicinal substances. The plant was formerly used as a stimulant and tonic. Nowadays yarrow is still used against colds and flu. The essential oils can relieve intestinal cramps and stomach aches and have an anti-inflammatory effect, the present flavonoids have an antibiotic effect, the salicylic acid has a painkilling effect and the potassium and sesquiterpene both counteract edema formation. The green leaves have a bleeding effect and were previously used for the treatment of wounds.
