About "Young tree grows in joint concrete work."

by Arthur van der Zwan

About the artwork

While visiting the Waterloopbos in Marknesse, I came across this young tree growing from a joint between 2 vertical concrete slabs.
The concrete slabs are part of the former Waterloopkundig Laboratorium where, among other things, the Water Works in the Netherlands but also harbours for foreign countries were developed.
The different pastel-like colours against the dark, contrasting water with the young green of the tree decided me to take this picture.
The play of colours on the concrete wall with a faint reflection in the water create a dreamy image you can disappear into despite the harsh contrast between water and concrete.
The image shows how strong nature is, who would expect a tree to want to grow between 2 concrete slabs?
I saw the picture hanging in a frame at home, reason enough for me to take a picture of a subject where visitors with a camera walked past it and sometimes asked what I was actually photographing. I am glad that not everyone sees the beauty of this location and can turn it into an image.
