The Zollverein colliery, also known as the Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr region, was an active coal mine in Essen from 1851 to 1986. It was named after the German Customs Union, which was founded in 1834. Today it is an architectural and industrial monument. Together with the neighbouring Zollverein coking plant, pits 12 and 1/2/8 of the colliery have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Zollverein is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and is known as the largest coal mine in the world.
