Zonnestraal is an iconic national monument, designed in the 1920s as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. The modernist architects Jan Duiker and Bernard Bijvoet realized their designs in 1928 according to the latest ideas in architecture, construction technology and health care. Zonnestraal is a wonderful example of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement in the Netherlands. Because it was later realized that these buildings have value as monuments, a comprehensive restoration programme was initiated in the 1990s (costing 12 million guilders). The main building has been restored to its former glory since May 2004.
