Bugs (Heteroptera) form a suborder of insects that, like the suborders of cicadas and plant lice respectively, is part of the umbrella order of Hemiptera. This classification is not entirely uncontroversial, as the cicadas are probably descended from the bugs, and therefore their group cannot be seen as an equivalent suborder alongside the bugs.
Bugs are usually small insects; most species are smaller than a centimetre. They basically have four wings; in some species these are reduced. Bugs have incomplete metamorphosis. They differ from other groups of insects in that they have tubular mouthparts with which food is sucked up.
