The Slender Triangle hoverfly Melanostoma scalare is a common hoverfly with a remarkably slender abdomen. The species can be recognised by its pollinated face and short-haired antennal brush. The triangular spots on the abdomen of the female have a concave trailing edge.
The species has a length of 7 to 9 mm and occurs from early April to mid-October.
This hoverfly occurs in all biotopes with shrubs or trees. In completely open areas, this species does not occur.
The larva feeds on small insects such as aphids and gall midges. It spends the winter as a full-grown larva.
