The swarm squirrel is a common squirrel found in large groups on dead wood or bark of living trees. The mushrooms have a bell shaped cap with a diameter of barely 1 cm. So the ink doesn't flow as abundantly and clearly as with the big brother (scaly ink fungus). Yet, if you look closely, you can see the ripe black spores as ink spots on the plates. But more distinctive features of this species are: the pale to mouse-grey, grooved and fine hairy cap and the hairy stalk.
