In Senegal see huge plains of grass, these steppes can easily catch fire due to the drought. I came across this beautiful scene when we were looking for harriers. The very trees that are so needed are slowly but surely being cut down to make a fire or to sell it at a market. The ever-growing population needs wood for cooking. These trees normally also provide food for migratory birds that pick fruit from them and thus gain strength. They see their habitat disappearing. Areas are also cut down to expand the land area as yields are quite low and sometimes even fail. There are no modern ways to cultivate there. The trees are often cut down with a machete to meet local needs. So this beautiful scene is a huge tragedy for nature and ultimately for the people.
